Shigeaki Kubo was born in 1973. He visited the production sites of promo videos and commercials since his school days. There he met Eiki Takahashi and started to study under him.
In 1997, he joined the film production company Krampus. From 2002 he worked as a freelancer.
He directed music videos for EXILE, Namie Amuro, DREAMS COME TURE, J SOUL BROTHERS III from EXILE TRIBE, GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE, THE RAMPAGE from EXILE TRIBE, YUI, Miliyah Kato, Kumi Koda, etc. He has directed over 500 works and received "VMAJ Best Video of the Year" award for 5 years in a row.
He served as the director of the "HiGH & LOW" series, the first project in the world featuring a lot of overwhelming action scenes unprecedented for Japanese movies and involving a great amount of media and entertainment. Moreover, he also directed the movie "HiGH & LOW THE WORST" presented in collaboration with "CROWS" and "WORST" which are the masterpieces of Hiroshi Takahashi's delinquent manga which has sold over 75 million copies in total.
In 2020, Shigeaki Kubo adapted "Shousetsu no Kamisama", the most touching novel written by Sako Aizawa which won "Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! 2020 Edition", "Honkaku Mystery Best 10", "Best Books of 2019" and was nominated in Japan Booksellers' Award, into a movie. Moreover, he directed "Mizu no nai Umi" which integrates poetry, music and videos and hit the big screen in the autumn of 2021 and is one of the six works in "Kinou Yori Akaku Ashita Yori Aoku", part 4 of the short film project "CINEMA FIGHTERS project".
Also, "GOLDEN KAMUY", a live-action film adaptation of the best-selling manga, was released in January 2024.
