PROFILE

Daishi Matsunaga was born in Tokyo in 1974. He was featured in "WATER BOYS" (2001 / Director: Shinobu Yaguchi) and other works as an actor. After that, as a director, he completed the documentary film "Pyuupiru" (2011 / Director) which records 8 years of contemporary artist Pyuupiru who has a gender identity disorder. The film was officially invited to the 40th International Film Festival in Rotterdam, the 11th Jeonju International Film Festival, the Paris International Film Festival and many other film festivals and received wide acclaim.
In 2015, his first feature film "Pieta in the Toilet" (2015 / Director & Scriptwriter / Cast: Yojiro Noda & Hana Sugisaki) was screened in Shinjuku Piccadilly and other movie theaters in Japan. The film won the Silver Award at the 20th Shindo Kaneto Awards and Daishi Matsunaga won the Yoshimitsu Morita Memorial Best New Director Award at the Yokohama Film Festival. This work was also an official selection of the International Competition category of the 16th Jeonju Film Festival, the Japan Now category of the 28th Tokyo International Film and the Voices category of the 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam.
In 2017, his documentary film "Vibration: THE YELLOW MONKEY" (2015 / Director) which records a year of activities of THE YELLOW MONKEY who came back after a 15-year hiatus in 2016. The film was an official selection of the Wide Angle category at the 22nd Busan International Film Festival and selected as one of the special entries to the 30th Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2018, he participated in the second installment of the "Asian Three-Fold Mirror" project launched by the Japan Foundation and the Tokyo International Film Festival as one of the up-and-coming directors in Asia and his work "HEKISHU" was screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival. His film "Hanalei Bay" (2018 / Director & Scriptwriter / Cast: Yo Yoshida, Reo Sano & Nijiro Murakami) adapted from Haruki Murakami's original work "Hanalei Bay" hit the big screen in the same year.
